I love Rome and all the romantic things for couples to do in Rome.
Rome and my relationship started out casual when I was in my teens and blossomed over the years into that slightly giddy kind of love. You could say our love is a little one sided, but I am sure that Rome has a soft spot for me. I know, because she never leaves me stranded or feeling unfulfilled.
Rome treats me well, possibly because I visit Rome in Spring and Rome in May is delightful. She invites me to wander her streets by day, cool my feet on her marble floors and sip wine in her Piazzas on romantic evenings in Rome.
There are many romantic things for couples to do in Rome.

It is good to see the authorities in Rome working to keep the romance of Rome alive at it’s major attractions in 2020 by removing souvenir stands from Piazza Navona, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps and Pantheon.

Three Hours Walking Tour of the Jewish Sector of Rome
For those wanting to walk through a vibrant area while learning from a local guide.
This tour is run by Explore Rome. Ask for romantic restaurant suggestions at the end of the tour.
Beginning in the Rione of Trastevere, beyond the Tiber River, this walk leads down lively cobbled streets hopping with a young university vibe.
Explore romantic Trastevere, on this 3-hour tour uncovering restaurants, bars, and cafés with an opportunity to visit boutiques and studios for some unique gifts.
Trastevere literally means beyond the Tiber, and was originally connected to the main city of Rome by a tiny wooden bridge. Initially the area was settled by Jews and Syrians arriving from the East.
See Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere, the large square at the front of Santa Maria church in Trastevere, one of the city’s oldest churches and one of the most visited in Rome.
Rome’s Jewish Ghetto or Serraglio delli Ebrei (enclosure of Jews) located near the Tiber, is bordered by Via del Portico d’Ottavia, Lungotevere dei Cenci, Via del Progresso, and Via di Santa Maria del Pianto and includes the Synagogue of Rome.
This area is interesting to walk around and today is known for its restaurants and some of the best food in Rome.
After our walk we decided to stay for a fabulous meal in a traditional Jewish restaurant.
This tour is run by Explore Rome and has been known to stray outside the boundaries of Trastevere and the Jewish Quarter. Inclusions:
- 3-hour guided tour
- Audio Headphones
Romantic Things to do in Rome at Night
A Three Hour Small Group Evening Walking Tour of Rome
For those who want to hit some big ticket items on foot.
Rome’s evening sky attains a deeper blue by evening and her ancient stone buildings glow. I love exploring Rome in the evening. This tour takes a maximum of 18 people which is the perfect number to be either up front amidst the action or stealing a quiet kiss at the back, while the sun sets romantically over the piazzas and fountains of Rome.
Hit the big romantic icons like the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, and the beautiful elongated Piazza Navona with it’s three very different and beautiful fountains. Piazza Navona is my favourite Rome Piazza. You can see it in our lead photo.
Suggestion: Steal back to the Trevi fountain in the wee hours for a quiet romantic moment. Inclusions:
- Professional guide
- Small group walking tour (maximum of 18 people)
- Instant confirmation

Private 4 hour Segway by Night
For those want a personal Private Tour without walking or taking car or bus.
This private tour uses either Segway or Ninebot Vehicles, including some with seats and takes in the major highlights of ancient Rome by night. It is a great alternative to a bus or walking tour. It is less strenuous and covers more territory then walking and in a far more personal way than by bus.
The tour leader spends time explaining vehicle operation and safety before leading a moonlight ride from Piazza Trilussa in romantic Trastevere. We stayed in Trastevere on our last Rome holiday and can vouch for it’s romantic lanes and restaurants.
You will see Ponte Sisto, Ponte St. Angelo, San Pietro, Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, Piazza della Minerva, Campo dei Fiori and the Piazza Farnese and more.
There are stops for Gelato/Coffee and photos, but not to visit the inside of any churches or monuments. You will however be shown hidden gems not easily found in Rome. Inclusions:
- Segway rental for tour duration
- Training session
- Tour leader
- Insurance

Explore Rome by Night with Pizza and Gelato
For those who want to explore Rome by night in a minivan with Pick-up and Drop-off.
Be collected from your accommodation by minivan (maximum of 8 people)
Explore Rome by moonlight and eat pizza in a typical local restaurant. Drive past the illuminated Roman Colosseum and toss a coin into the baroque Trevi fountain.
See the impeccably intact Pantheon. Walk through the impressive Piazza Navona with it’s three fountains. It’s my favourite Rome Piazza and I know you will love it. If I had to choose just one piazza in Rome it would be this.
At night the Piazza Navona has a beautiful ambience, with the people sitting El Fresco at the Cafes and Restaurants lining the square.
See St. Peter’s Basilica and finish the night with a tasting of excellent Gelato.
The guide brings the history of Rome to life on this tour. It’s a great way to meet other people, or you might end up with a private tour if no-one else books.

4 Hour Foodie Tour of Rome by Night
For Foodies who want quality, value for money and fun.
This incredibly popular tour run by The Roman Food Tour, scores an impressive 4.9 out of a possible 5 stars by authentic Get Your Guide reviewers.
Conducted by a passionate foodie, the 4 hour evening walk starts with an aperitivo at Le Chiccherie, with mozzarella di bufala, ricotta di bufala and butter di bufala – yes Le Chiccherie specialises in water buffalo products.
You will also sample truffle cheese, pesto, tomatoes, artichokes and a glass of refreshing crisp DOC rose wine.
Aperitivo is followed with pizzas by Gabriele Bonci at Pizzarium, Rome’s number 1 pizzeria. Rome prides itself on it’s pizza and this 500 sq. ft. including the kitchen, pizza-by-the-slice bakery near the Vatican Museums is standing room only and loved by locals and tourists alike. Don’t thing round pizzas but rectangular trays of pizza cut into rectangles.
All in all you will taste 20 food offerings on this guided evening walk. You will meet the families behind the places you visit and hear their secrets. It includes tastings of a 25 year old aged balsamic and the most expensive ham in the world.
The very funny Stefano Paciotti at Paciotti gourmet food shop offers up tastings of exceptional Italian cheeses, prosciuttos and salamis, accompanied by fine wine. You’ll find rare truffles plus taste 25-year-aged balsamic vinegar and more.
I hope you’re pacing yourselves because next are three fresh Roman pasta dishes and wine at an authentic local restaurant.
The tour concludes with a lesson in gelato, at the Fatamorgana gelateria where you learn how to distinguish real artisanal gelato from the regular stuff. Inclusions:
- Foodie guide
- 20 food tastings
Romantic places to visit in Rome that are free.
It’s good to know that if you have the time and energy you can have many romantic experiences in Rome that are totally free of charge. A few of these are:
- The Spanish Steps
- Trevi Fountain
- Pantheon
- Piazza Navona – there are many more romantic piazzas but this is my favourite
- Lungotevere – Tiber Waterfront – a series of boulevards beside the Tiber
- Villa Borghese Gardens (at the top of the Spanish Steps) – Explore the garden (free) then hire a row boat (from the Temple of Aesculapius) and serenade your love on the lake. Take a picnic lunch either in the park or boat.
The best Romantic Views of Rome that are free
Terrazza del Pincio is the terrace at the front of Villa Borghese with views out over Piazza del Popolo and across to the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica the Vatican.
In reverse, if you’re fit, climb Michelangelo’s masterpiece, the dome of St. Peters for views back across the city.
Janiculum Terrace has great views over Rome and not many tourists. Catch a bus, there are food stalls and buskers. If you’re staying in Trastevere, it is easy to walk here.
The orange garden on Aventine Hill is I think the most romantic viewpoint in Rome. It is also a beautiful Rione to walk around with some nice boutique hotels and beautiful gardens.
Look out from the top floor of Castel Sant’ Angelo, which was built as Hadrian’s tomb and has the gorgeous Ponte Sant’ Angelo at the front with it’s Angel Statues.
Lo Zadiaco, a cafe and icecream parlour on Monte Mario hill, with wonderful views. Situated at the highest point in Rome you will find it at Viale del Parco Mellini 88/92, 00136 Rome – north of the Rione of Prati. Recommended for view and ice-cream.
Overlook the Roman Forum from Palatine Hill Rome. This really is a fantastic viewpoint that not everyone finds. Read about it here.
